About the Author

   Jean Flaherty grew up in Newton, NJ with her parents and two younger brothers. She attended West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where she was mellophone section leader of the Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band, served as Secretary for the band General Assembly, and was Vice President and President of the WCU chapter of MENC (NAfME).  

   

     Since graduating in 2004, Jean has taught in positions ranging from K-8 elementary music to middle school and high school band. Currently, she teaches PreK-5 music in Albemarle County, VA, serves as a marching/music instructor for the Albemarle HS Marching Patriots, and teaches private lessons. Since 2016, Jean has directed the Albemarle County Concert Band, which is a community band she founded for local educators. As a horn player, Jean performs with the Valley Winds, which is a band for music educators in Harrisonburg, VA. She has taken courses in Alternative Rehearsal Techniques with Ed Lisk, Completing the Circle with Bud Beyer, and played in bands conducted by Col. Arnald Gabriel. Jean has taken conducting courses with Glen Adsit, Rob Carnochan, Steven Davis, Richard Floyd, Michael Haithcock, Craig Kirchhoff, Kevin Sedatole, Damon Talley, and H. Robert Reynolds.

 

     Outside of music, Jean enjoys reading, traveling, spending time outdoors, eating delicious food prepared by her husband, playing board games with her brothers, volunteering with her family at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York whenever she can, and spending time with friends.
